What’s On in the Norfolk Broads for August ’12

If you are visiting the Norfolk Broads during the month of August, check out our suggestions of things to do in the local area to help you get the most out of your stay.

Sunday 5th August

Take a look on-board the Wherry Albion at Oulton Broad Yacht Station.  Learn about the history of the Wherries and their importance to the Broads.

Caister Lifeboat Day at Caister Lifeboat Station, Come and meet the crew, see both lifeboats being launched and enjoy a fun family day out supporting this very worthwhile cause.  10.00am – 4.30pm

Wroxfest – This one day music and beer festival, in partnership with The Shed Wroxham, will be held at Trafford Park on Sunday 5 August 2012 (Gates open 12pm – 11pm).

Tuesday 7th August

Evening Explorers at Ranworth Broad.  Join us for an evening adventure at NWT Ranworth Broad, it is a great time to be on the reserve as the wildlife that calls it home are either settling down for the evening or just getting active. Who knows what we will see. Keep your eyes peeled adventurers!  Cost: £4 adults, £2.50 children, booking essential – call 01603 625540.  7.30pm – 9.00pm

Wednesday 8th August

Take a look on-board the Wherry Albion at Norwich Yacht Station.  Learn about the history of the Wherries and their importance to the Broads.

Firework Display at Great Yarmouth Central Beach from 9.00pm

Friday 10th August 

One Hand Clapping, playing  at the Lion Inn P.H, Thurne.  Local band playing a mix of classic and modern rock, folk, rhythm and blues, roots and Americana from 8.00pm.

Saturday 11th August

Guided sunset canoe trail, with the help of your canoe guide you can silently explore South Walsham inner and outer broad and undisturbed tributaries, with the opportunity to see some of the Broads’ best kept secrets – kingfishers, bitterns and maybe the elusive otter.  For departure times and to book see website.

Sunday 12th August

Pirate Day at Museum of the Broads in Stalham  10.30am – 5.00pm.  Enjoy being a Pirate on the Broads. Make a pirate hat and eye patch, follow the clues to find the Treasure, have your face painted as a pirate, dig for gold, play on our Pirate ship, take a boat trip to our ‘Treasure Island’. Meet the Museum Pirates on their home ground!!  A PRICE FOR THE BEST DRESSED PIRATE ON THE DAY!  BBQ available at lunch time. Falcon rides from 11.00 to 15.00
Normal Museum charges. Adult £4, concession £3.50, Family (2+3) £12, child £2.50

Tuesday 14th August

Take a look on-board the Wherry Albion in Horning .  Learn about the history of the Wherries and their importance to the Broads.

Wednesday 15th August

Pottering Round the Middle at Potter Heigham – A free guided walk starting at Potter Heigham and walking along the riverbank up to Candle Dyke, then inland along the dyke to Middle Wall where we turn south and return to Potter Heigham.  10.00am – 1.00pm

Ghost Walk at Fairhaven Woodland & Water Garden, South Walsham.  Enjoy a spine-tingling walk through the woods listening to the myths and legends of the Fairhaven Garden.  Free with garden entry. £5.50 adult; £5 conc.; £3 child; under 5s free; dogs 25p. Free to members. No need to book.   From 6.30pm

Saturday 18th August

Farmers Market at  Fairhaven Water Gardens, South Walsham – Lots of lovely local produce fresh from the Broadland area.   10.00am until 2.00pm

One Hand Clapping, playing at The Malsters P.H at Ranworth from 8.00pm.

Sunday 19th August

Nelson’s Column Ascents at The Norfolk Pillar/ Nelson’s Monument – A wonderful opportunity to climb all 217 steps of Nelson’s Monument in Great Yarmouth and experience the breathtaking views. Trained Monument Guides are on hand to explain the monument’s construction, history and restoration and its links with Admiral Lord Nelson.  10.00am – 4.00pm

Summer Fun Day at Great Yarmouth Market Place – Family fun, entertainment and activities on market day in the town centre. Shop and have fun with all the family.  11.00am – 3.00pm

Friday 24th August

Really Wild at Ranworth at NWT Ranworth Broad.  Join us this morning at our floating visitor centre before heading out and exploring the reserve in search of wildlife. Saturday 25th – Monday 27th August

The Curious Crocklebog Capers at BeWILDerwood, Horning.  A celebration of all things Crocklebog… Brave through the Crockleclock Challenge, follow Mildred’s Butterfly Bumble AND make an authentic Crocklebog handbag or tiara!

Sunday 26th August

Take a look on-board the Wherry Albion in Coltishall.  Learn about the history of the Wherries and their importance to the Broads – this event is to mark the 1912 flood centenary.

Thurne Windpump Open Day – A unique opportunity to experience first hand the workings of the mill.  2.00pm – 4.00pm

Swallows & Amazons – paddle to TheCanoeMan Woodland Activity Centre where you will be taught the mysterical art of bushcraft, learning to light fires and build shelters. During the lunch break you will have the opportunity to explore the wood, followed in the afternoon by a woodland archery session to discover who amongst your friends is the next Robin Hood.  Sessions start 11am – 3pm  or 3pm – 5pm.
